Why I Like My Two-Year-Old

0

I love my children more than anything.

This doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes get frustrated and upset with them, and I have a two-year-old so…hello tantrums! Two-year-olds get a bad rap though. I’ve lived through the “terrible twos” and the “threenager” phases with my oldest daughter and I survived. The second time around though, I’m really savoring this age and I actually like it.

First of all, there is so much learning going on and it is just amazing to watch. Communication is a big one at this age and there are new words being added to my daughter’s vocabulary on a daily basis. You can’t get much cuter than a two-year-old trying to copy and pronounce new words and phrases. It is so fun to see their thoughts expressed in this new way.

There are also the things like learning how to do puzzles, sing songs, play pretend, and the list goes on. While these are simple things to us as we grow older, to a toddler these things are huge victories worth celebrating. Cheering on all of these accomplishments is one of the best parts of watching my baby become a full-fledged toddler.

Joy. There is so much joy at this age. Joy in discovery, in play, and in interacting with family and friends. There are, of course, a lot of other strong emotions as they are figuring out the world but there is just so much happiness. I love all of the giggles, squealing, dancing, and singing that happen in my house on a regular basis.

When the tantrums do come I am finding that I have more patience this time around and more understanding of where the emotion is coming from. This makes them no less difficult to deal with in the moment (especially in public) but I have learned to let them roll off my back. If my daughter can go from screaming one minute to laughing hysterically the next, then so can I.

At this stage, I am choosing to hold onto the joy, the fun, and the new experiences rather than dwell on those few “terrible” parts about being two.

I am a wife and mommy to two sweet girls ages 4 and 10 months. I work from home part-time as an art teacher for a local online school. As a Cincinnati native I love this city and am so thankful to be raising my family here. I love getting creative with my four year old and letting her run wild with paint and lots of other art supplies. I am passionate about encouraging creativity and art making at any age. When I am not crafting or having adventures with my little girls, I love organizing, decorating, shopping for a bargain, exploring new places for family fun around the city, cooking, and searching for local restaurants with great food. I also run an Etsy shop, be tees. by AJB (https://www.etsy.com/shop/AuroraJanesBoutique), with my sister selling screen printed baby and toddler apparel.
