8 Reasons I’m Just Like a Disney Princess

PrincessAs a little girl I would watch Cinderella and so badly want to be her. Even sleeping in the cold, drafty attic (with an impressive view) seemed romantic and don’t even get me started on Prince Charming. Ariel seemed to have it pretty good too with her adorable little friends and midnight boat rides – who needs to be able to talk? Well, fast forward to motherhood and I think my dream has finally come true. No, I don’t have mice as pets or fly around on a magic carpet (unfortunately), but everyday I find myself in the shoes of a Disney princess…they just don’t happen to be glass.

These are the eight princesses I can relate to the most…

8. Ariel, The Little Mermaid. “Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat?!” Yep, I’m a hoarder just like Ariel. My three-year-old son scribbles on a piece of paper and calls it a truck and I can’t bear to throw it away. So into the underwater cave cabinet it goes. Let’s just hope my husband doesn’t find it with his trident.

princess 27. Snow White. I may only have two little ones following me around, but trust me; they encompass aspects of all seven dwarfs. Sneezy, Dopey, Doc, Bashful, Happy, Sleepy and definitely Grumpy. I see them all each and every single day.

princess 36. My favorite and perhaps the most obvious, Cinderella. “Make the fire, fix the breakfast. Wash the dishes, do the moppin.’ And the sweepin’ and the dustin.’ They always keep her hoppin.’” In fact, I got the idea for this list while I was on my hands and knees, scrubbing yogurt out of our rug. I can also relate to her whenever I do my hair, makeup and put on a pair of pants that aren’t leggings. It feels just like a visit from my Fairy Godmother!

princess 45. Merida from Brave. As a more classic Disney princess lover, I had to Google Merida. But I instantly felt the connection. She is strong willed and follows her heart. Motherhood has brought these characteristics out in me, even more than before. I also think she’s a great role model for my baby girl.

4. How can I not include Elsa? We both have long blonde hair and blue eyes, but the comparisons surprisingly don’t stop there. I love snow. Oh and I can relate to her “Let it Go” mantra more than I care to admit.

3. And her sweet sister, Anna. I jump into things quickly, just like Anna. I listen to my heart and go with my gut. That means I often get hurt, but it also leads to adventure and just like Anna, true love.

2. Jasmine. After Cinderella, Aladdin is a close second favorite. Like Jasmine, I am a dreamer. She craves adventure but feels trapped by her role as a princess, and as a mom I can relate. I struggle with finding balance of responsibility and freedom. And of course we have the same flat abs (wink wink).

1. Sleeping Beauty. Don’t tell me there aren’t times in the middle of the night that you don’t wish you could just prick your finger on a spinning wheel and sleep for days. Okay, so maybe I can’t really relate to her, but I sure am jealous!

Princess 1So the next time you are scrubbing your floor or wiping the nose of your own “Sneezy,” picture yourself in a ball gown, twirling around with the Prince of your dreams. Because as moms, we really are just like Disney princesses.

I am a native Cincinnatian and thanks to a lot of moving, I know this city pretty well. I grew up on the Westside, attended Walnut Hills High School, and then headed to Oxford for an education degree at Miami University. After a few years in Hyde Park, my husband and I are settled in Northern Kentucky for the time being. One of the great things about the Cincinnati area is the abundance of wonderful neighborhoods, schools and family friendly activities! My husband, Andrew, and I have a son, Aiden (2) and our baby girl, Audrey. We didn’t exactly plan all of the “A” names, but it allows us to keep our family nickname – the A-Team. I am an elementary school teacher, but am on a leave of absence right now to be home with my kids. My days are filled with entertaining my babies, taking way too many pictures on my phone and changing a lot of diapers. Thanks to recent open-heart surgery, I have an aortic valve that ticks (like a clock!), I have ornithophobia (Google it) and I broke my hip when I was 18 (I will never ice skate again). But, I do love photography on my “real” camera, pretending I’m a good enough chef to have my own cooking show and playing outside. I turned to writing/blogging in order to document my family’s journey to better health and as motivation to keep myself on track. You can read more about my personal journey at www.limkelife.blogspot.com. I look forward to sharing the adventure of motherhood with you!
