Soccer Mom Hacks for Surviving the Season

Who knew?

I was always told that Cincinnati was a “Baseball Town” and we do love our Reds, but nothing compares to the flood of Orange and Blue excitement we have seen over the past few years. And next year, (in case you have been living under a rock), we become an OFFICIAL soccer town as FC Cincinnati joins the MLS

I for one, think we finally got this right. 

I LOVE this sport. Soccer has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As young as 6-years-old, I have vivid memories of my mom driving me to weekly practice and my dad cheering me on during my Saturday games. I loved the challenge, the mixture of teamwork and personal accountability. I loved the tradition of being part of something so timeless. And apparently, I am not alone.

My social media accounts are inundated with posts from fellow soccer moms at Saturday games as well as parents sharing in the joy of soccer with their kids at an FC Cincinnati game. The energy and passion are palpable.

My fellow CMB moms and I feel that being a soccer family is worth the investment, but behind all of those adorable little cherubs is a tired soccer mom (insert dad or any other tired adult as appropriate) who works endlessly to pay for those shin guards and cheer on those sidelines. It’s for that reason that our team of veteran soccer moms would like to share our top 5 #soccermom hacks to help you navigate soccer season and beyond!

  1. Cereal CAN be dinner. In fact, even when you aren’t rushing back out the door for soccer practice, it probably should be dinner at least once a week. It just makes sense. No one will complain and it’s fast and easy when the schedule gets crazy and you need to just check something off the list. (And if you want to go the extra mile, there are some easy recipes HERE to make even the adult mouth happy. Acai bowls with cereal anyone?)
  2. Never wait until the morning of to make sure the uniform is clean from last week, always set stuff out the night before. The ball should also live in the car for the entire season because otherwise there is a high likelihood that it will be forgotten. (Really, you should leave as much in the car as possible. We ALL know what it looks like when we are trying to get out the door, with kids in tow, to be somewhere.)
  3. Buy (or borrow) shin-guards and cleats second-hand. Put an ask out there on social media and see what your friends have lying around. If that doesn’t work, there are some local second hands kids and sports stores where you can have pretty good success.
  4. The bigger the water bottle, the better! Your kiddo may love their little princess or dinosaur water bottle they use at school, but they will be out there hustling hard, so don’t skimp in this area.
  5. Don’t underestimate the importance of spectator comfort! Leave a picnic blanket and chairs in the car. Use a blanket that has a  waterproof backing on one side because those early morning games have dewy grass. Pack a shade tent if needed (it’s okay to be “those” people). Have a non-perishable snack bag that is always packed for the spectators. Cereal is perfect here too, but also granola bars, pretzels, nuts, jerky, etc. It’s just as important as the sporting equipment. Full bellies make for much happier, sideline siblings. (Which makes for happier sideline parents.) We also recommend packing a bag with books, an extra soccer ball, bubbles, markers/coloring books, mini-figurines, etc. for entertainment. Trust us, this is worth the effort if you have other kids in tow or even two players that have different game times.

It doesn’t matter if you are spending the night as a family at an FCC game or cheering on your own little player as they race towards the goal, being a soccer family – and a soccer town – is pretty great!
