Should I Eat Mor Chikin?

3

MorChikinThe first time I heard about you, dear Chick-Fil-A, was during a Super Bowl many years ago. Cows parachuting or something, with misspelled banners telling me that I should “eat mor chikin.” As an English teacher at the time, I was appalled by these poor illiterate cows that were fueling my students’ position that spelling doesn’t matter. I thought, “Bad form!” and moved on with my chicken-free life.

Fast forward to the present. After seeing more than 5 different postings on Instagram about Chick-Fil-A within one scroll session, I asked my fellow Cincinnati Moms Blog contributors, what is the deal with this place? Why are all of my mom friends praising Chick-Fil-A with pictures of their smiling, satiated toddlers?

Well. I was in for a surprise. Turns out that most of my fellow contributors love, excuse me, LOVE this fast food institution. I’ll keep it anonymous, but it ranked up there with beloved college memories and Disney World. Yes, apparently it ranks with the happiest place on Earth.

Fellow parents, I already know I’m odd when it comes to motherhood necessities. I don’t understand the appeal of Target. I drink coffee for the “romantic nature” (as my husband teases me), not the caffeine buzz. I don’t have any fun mom sayings on magnets or mugs. And I apparently don’t understand the glory that is Chick-Fil-A.

I come to you, hat in hand, begging you to explain to me what makes this place so fantastic. Is it really THAT great? I mean, come on, it’s fast food. There’s no creepy purple blob named Grimace to add an air of mystery. There’s no cute chihuahua trying to teach me Spanish. There are just poorly educated parachuting cows, a drive-thru, and, I’m assuming, a lot of chicken products.

Convince me that I need to give this place a whirl.

One minute my husband and I are strolling down the boardwalk near our home in New Jersey with our daughter and dog, and the next we're on a plane bound for Cincinnati! As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing better than an adventure. Plus, it seems as though all of the things I love: running, snowboarding, traveling, food, and sports are all right here for us to enjoy. I'm looking forward to discovering this city with my family, trying new things, and sharing my experience with you!

  1. 1. Kind, courteous employees. Seriously-I’ve never seen any of them grumpy, rude, or apathetic.
    2. They deliver your food to your table after you order. No trying to juggle your toddler, a tray, and your purse.
    3. The tables and high chairs are actually cleaned between guests.
    4. Free table topper placemats.
    5. Kid friendly meals, a teeny bit healthier than typical fast food. They have really nice fruit cups you can get instead of fries for no extra charge.
    6. An indoor, air conditioned play area that may smell slightly of sweaty boy, but is regularly cleaned.
    7. Employees that frequently walk around the dining room, getting you drink refills or anything else you need.
    8. Frosted lemonade. Nuggets with Chick-fil-A sauce. Fruit or waffle fries-it’s a delicious meal!!
    9. Seriously, the nicest owners and employees ever!

  2. I should warn…I’m a self confessed coffee addict who spends her free time joyfully exploring the aisles of target, purchasing vinyl to craft #momlife mugs…yes, I am THAT basic.

But Chick fila is my go to fast food. We love Chick-Fila for many reasons.
    1. Healthier options. Fresh fruit. Grilled nuggets. To die for soups AND amazing salads.
    2. Best Customer Service ever!
    3. Placemats that have adhesive to stick to the table come in kids meals!
    4. As sanitary as possible playplace
    5. Ability to order ahead using the app
    6. It taste SO good!

  3. Jamie, I’m totally with you… especially the insanity over Starbucks. Just. Don’t. Get. It. Why would I pay insane amounts of money for burnt coffee and corn syrup – based additions? Yuck!

I honestly didn’t understand the obsession with Chick -fil-a, either. It was a mall food court option from ancient memories of my teen days, one which I never indulged in… Until one came near our neighborhood and I kept hearing its praises.

I had a toddler at that point and met a friend there for a playdate. I was amazed at the difference in the quality of the ingredients, the exceptional customer service, and value. The clean play area secured my new appreciation.

In full disclosure, I’m not a fan of fast food, prefer organic as much a possible, and I’m still not a fan of the chicken sandwich. That said, I feel better about ‘indulging’ in fast food there than most other places. There’s something the entire family can find to eat. I always get a salad or wrap.

To answer your challenge directly, it’s not up to me to convince you to do anything. I’m more or of a ‘live and let live’ person. However, I appreciate your candor and thought I would share my (similar?) story. Carry on, CFA- free, or not. 😉
