Last year, my husband and I were new to Netflix. We’ve had Direct TV for just about our entire marriage in some form or another, but only just enough for NFL ticket so my husband can watch his beloved Steelers. Access to countless seasons of countless shows was difficult for us to get a grasp of. It was a sea of possibilities.
Over the summer, we started watching The Walking Dead. When the constant gruesome scenes subsided, we fell in love with the characters. As the seasons dredged on, we were heartbroken as some of those first characters started to die off. We were apprehensive as they added new people to the group. We wondered what adventure would be ahead of them when they moved on.
One episode at a time, we ticked off seasons 1-4, and started on season 5. A few episodes in, I lost complete interest. I would snarl at the suggestion of catching the next episode. I just literally couldn’t even.
We finally took the advice of some dedicated WD watchers, and gave the show another chance. We forced ourselves through the slow episodes – and I’m here to tell you if you’re stuck on season 5, episode 4. KEEP GOING!
But I got to thinking. The Walking Dead, while completely fantasy in its premise, isn’t that far off from real life.
A Few Life Lessons from The Walking Dead
- Life is boring sometimes. There isn’t always drama (and there doesn’t always have to be drama). Eat up those boring times, make them something to remember.
- Family is who you make it. Even if it’s a mishmash of people you’ve collected along the way.
- You need to ask new people 3 questions before you can trust them: How many walkers have you killed? How many people have you killed? and Why? It’s just logical.
- There is such a thing as the perfect beard. “Someone who shall remain nameless” needs to take note (ahem, husband). Rick’s beard gets all the heart eyes from me!
- Should you ever find yourself in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, remember this… always aim your weapon for the forehead.
