I’ve been working at a local grocery store chain in customer service for almost a year now. I’ve heard a couple of these phrases over time:
“Isn’t a career important to you?”
“You should put your job first.”
“Do you wish you made more money?”
Woah. Judge much? Let me tell you why I choose to do what I do.
- It allows me the flexibility. I have an awesome boss man (you know who you are girl!). She helps and allows me to work around my daughter’s school schedule, family events, and church (which is SOOO important to me). Not many jobs would be this flexible. I am so very blessed with a great workplace that understands and adapts to my life.
- Helps me set boundaries. I’ve been at points in my life where I have focused on the wrong things. However, now, I’ve realized what is important to me in life. My family. My little girl and my husband are what matters. That is, and will always be my number 1 focus in my life. I’ve seen some people in my life put work first and family second. In my opinion, that’s not a good way to live.
- It keeps me humble. Working in customer service has its challenges, that’s for sure. Some days, enjoying the company of challenging people can be difficult. I’ve learned, through time, that everyone needs some light in their life. A simple act of kindness can completely turn someone’s day around. While my job isn’t glamorous, high paying, or ‘ important’- I feel like I can make a difference to those around me. I can be the light anywhere.
- I enjoy it. Yep, I do! I really do (well, most days). I enjoy talking to everyone, and the work atmosphere. It’s laid back the majority of the time. I work hard while I’m clocked in and do my job. When I clock out, my mind is focused on home. I also have time to do the things I want to do! It’s a win-win.
I’m in no way trying to throw shade at the working moms out there. We all have our likes/dislikes. Everyone has a place where they fit in and feel at ease. I’m simply telling my story.
However, I will say that if you, AT ALL feel like its time to change your job- DO IT! Never be scared to switch your priorities. Life is way too short to be miserable and unhappy. It’s scary to make a change. It can feel like diving into unknown waters. But, when you do it…it can feel so refreshing. It was a renewal for me. I will never turn back to my old self.
I love this:
