My Top 4 “Musts” When it Comes to Growing Old Gracefully

Don’t tell anyone I told you, but I am staring down the barrel at 40 this year. Ouch… it hurts to even type it.

I would like to think that I am an older and wiser woman these days, but the fact is that I have basically been in denial about this thing called aging until just recently. The person I see in the mirror is starting to show the signs of the times. The wrinkles are undeniable, my hair is not nearly as shiny and smooth as it once was, and I won’t even get into that almost 40 post-baby body.

The bottom line is that I can no longer deny that I am getting older. And really aging doesn’t bother me, but I have resented the fact that I have to pay more attention to how I take care of myself, the older I have gotten. Fortunately, I have been able to find some “best practices” that work for my life without feeling high-maintenance which is simply not my jam.

HAIR

I was born with very blonde, straight, and smooth hair. Almost 40 years and two babies later I am realizing that I took that for granted and my hair just is not the same. After living in the denial that is blonde highlights for a while, I finally started to explore new hair products to help me get that smooth and silky texture I have been missing. One thing I have learned is that I can’t shortchange myself in this department. I need quality products that help bring out the best in my hair and that don’t dry out the already dry skin on my scalp. Head and Shoulders Smooth and Silky Shampoo & Conditioner does just this. I have found it is important to use BOTH the shampoo and conditioner together to get the full benefit of the product.

The shampoo’s rich lather stops my scalp from itching and keeps flakes at bay. The thick, creamy conditioner makes my hair shiny and smooth, while leaving it smelling wonderful all day long.

Fortunately, with Head & Shoulders, it’s possible to get a great product at a great price at a convenient location – Kroger! A healthy scalp is the key to healthy hair. Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky Shampoo and Conditioner takes inspiration from leading skin care products and works to clean, protect, and moisturize your scalp long after you leave the shower. Following up my Head & Shoulders shampoo with Head & Shoulders conditioner ensures that I see the full benefits of the product on my (aging) dry scalp. (You will love the way your hair smells as well!)

SKIN

I know we are all super careful about making sure our kiddos have SPF, but what about you? Do you wear sunscreen when you go to the zoo? Do you reapply? I have extremely pale skin and age spots are in my genetics, so my skin is something I have begun to pay extra attention to as I have aged. Sunscreen is a MUST. In addition to using official sunscreen when I am out and about, I try to find products that have a baseline SPF in them to help protect my skin daily. You can easily find lotions, make-up, and even chapstick with SPF in them and the added bonus is that at Kroger, you can find a variety of options that fill this need in the same aisle where you pick up your Head & Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner. I love this efficiency.

FOOD

Ah, diet. We KNOW the food we put into our body matters, but as I have aged, I can tell that my body cares more than it used to. Heartburn and acne were NOT part of my life when I was younger, but now I can tell a definite correlation to when I am eating poorly. I love the produce section at Kroger and the prepacked fruits and veggies that make it just as easy to grab apples (love that bag of Honey Crips) as it is to grab chips.

WATER

I love water. I always have. As I get older though, I am much more acutely aware of when I am not drinking enough. Dry skin, headaches, fatigue… all of these things are much better when I am hydrated. And really there is no excuse. Have you seen the water aisle (yes, it’s an entire aisle) at Kroger? Carbonated water, flavored water, or good old-fashioned water… whatever your preference, snag some along with the other things I have mentioned above while shopping because it’s so good for you! Throw some of that fresh fruit you picked up into a pitcher of water for some color and sweetness.

So there you have it – my top 4 things that I have reluctantly begun to be more intentional about caring for in my “old age”. The best part about it is that it’s actually really easy to do since I can throw them all in my cart during one trip to Kroger. (And yes, Clicklist would work as well!)

I am Mom to two beautiful, sassy little girls; Nora & Meredith. It was only after becoming a mother that I really started to appreciate how lucky we are to live in this Southwest Ohio, surrounded by amazing green space, culture, history, sports, and the arts. I love using all aspects of Cincinnati (Dayton and NKY too if I am being honest) as a playground for my kids and myself. I often drag my friends and family from the East side to the West side in search of another new and exciting adventure.
