Family Night: Ideas for Warming Up Your Winter Evenings

0

Anyone else loathe weekday nights during the winter? The holidays are over, the house looks bare sans holiday decorations and it’s so very cold. Plus, I leave for work in the dark and often get home in the dark, feeling like time together as a family has very limited options.

Winter Family Night Ideas
Pining for warmer days and nights

So, I started brainstorming ways to organize our family time in a more meaningful way during the winter months. Check out some ideas for family night below:

Game Night – Break out the board games! Half the fun is picking out what game you’ll play. Our current favorites are SmartGames, a fun, logic game for 3-7 olds through classic fairytales.

Library Night – Brave the cold and leave the house!? Are you kidding me? Our library is open until 8 p.m. on certain nights. I typically let the kids pick out a few books each and they love to use the check out computer. It’s a great, inexpensive way to spend your night.

Movie Night – I know, pretty unoriginal. But, every once in awhile, it’s fun to start a fire, snuggle up and queue Netflix together. Check out some family-friendly movie options here

Yoga Night – We often search YouTube for videos of kids yoga sessions. Cosmic Yoga is our favorite for their fun themes and the instructor’s accent (just like Peppa the Pig, my kids say). Be sure to relax with smoothies afterwards. Namaste!

Grocery Night – My kids were gifted a cash register for Christmas. This poor toy has had no downtime whatsoever. We typically use things we find around the house – food, toys, trinkets, etc. and set them up on a bench. Use your old shopping bags and let their imaginations run wild.

Bake Night – My kids to love to help bake – chop, stir, taste test. Doesn’t matter what it is, they are there for it. Spend a night making a new recipe found on CMB or bake cookies for a neighbor.

Spa Night – Bath bubbles, cucumber water, heated towels and pedicures for the family!

iPad Night – I’m still easing into the idea of letting my kids play with our iPad, but I bought the Tiggly Math Learning System. We haven’t used it yet, but this will surely be a learning experience for all of us!

Science Night – Check out a book from the library to make your own science experiments. I’ve always wanted to check out Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments. But, where’s Mom’s Book of Awesome Things?

Take a Hike Night – Pile on your outerwear and boots and a brave the outdoors. My kids love looking for animal tracks in the snow. My kids also love to document their finds with a picture or two.

Fort Night – Trail mix, flashlights, chairs and blankets are all you need to pull this off!

Target Night – just kidding, that one’s just for us Moms 😉
