Cincinnati Functional Fitness Review

Though once an athlete, working out is no longer easiy for me or a natural part of my weekly schedule. Trust me I have had many “good intentions” of working out but you know how it is moms, it’s just challenging to add extra hours to the week. Plus staying accountable, which is a MAJOR road block for me, is also challenging. This past month I was given the opportunity to try out one of the local gyms though and I “jumped” at the opportunity. Cincinnati Functional Fitness is located in the Oakley/Pleasant Ridge area and prides itself on having a unique perspective of physical fitness and health. Functional fitness is defined as, “one’s ability to optimally combine agility, coordination, flexibility, strength and endurance.”

So on the day of my personal training, I am going to be very candid, I was seriously regretting “jumping” at the opportunity. I imagined a gym full of very intense, super fit, muscley types. My stream of thought went something like this: “Would there even be other moms there? And if there were, they were probably those mom’s who hire nanny’s just so they can work out all day. I am not a size 2, and I definitely have gained a little cellulite over the years. Am I even wearing the right kind of  ‘workout clothes’?” I literally went into a panic of sorts. Plus I had my 5 year old with me, who the trainer I had talked to (Quentin) said was perfectly fine; but I was not really sure I believed him.

As I finally gained my Daniel Tiger courage, I walked in and was greeted by a friendly staff. Quentin took the time to have me complete a short survey on my overall health and my health goals as well as talked to me about these goals. This definitely made me feel more at ease and less like I was going to be pushed into something that was not attainable for me. The gym itself does not have a child care area but they are okay with kids coming. My daughter is pretty low key and can entertain herself very easily; so giving her a spot to hang out and knowing she would stay there was no problem. However, I do know that there are much more curious and busy kids out there, so mommas you kind of have to know what your kid is capable of here.

To start my workout, Quentin walked me through the plan of the day and the expectations which was very helpful. He demonstrated each step or activity that was going to be done before doing it and adapted any exercise that my body was not quite ready to do. The gym itself is not overwhelming and houses itself in one main room, with additional rooms to the side for classes. There were a handful of people working out when I was there but they all appeared to be average people just like myself. Some people were doing personal training, as I was, while others worked out in groups of 2 or 3. The age range was also quite vast. It became evident to me that this gym was not about having a particular “image” but really wanted to meet their clients at whatever ability they were at and merely enhance each person’s unique physical ability. As I left the gym, I definitely felt my workout but I did not feel completely drained or like I had just been run through a boot camp. I felt encouraged and capable.

Perhaps, many of you reading this feel similar to me. You want to increase your physical health and wellness but you’re just not sure how or you’re fearful that you are too out of shape to even consider going to gym. CFF might me a good fit for you. They not only offer personal training, but also small group work-outs (2-5 people) and larger weekly classes. So, are you intrigued? Maybe feeling some motivation to take the “jump” into reaching your health and fitness goals? I am a born and raised Cincinnatian and love all that this “big-little” city has to offer. Gardening, organization, maintaining life-long friendships and finding new places around town with my daughter; I always like to be busy but am also quite the homebody. Learning to truly find balance in life and being more “wholely” healthy are things I am leaning more into these days… well at least making the effort to.
