A Big Outdoor Treasure for the Little Ones We Love

2

I cannot image a childhood of creativity, laughter, and fun without the amazing gift that the outdoors has to offer.  I remember as a child making a fort in the middle of evergreen trees, having a wild flower garden (which were really weeds that I would not let my dad mow over), rolling down hills in the park, having picnics, and taking family trips to the Smokey Mountains.  I love these memories.  They always bring a smile to my face; a sense of content in my mind.  As such, being an outdoor mom is something I value and make space for in our life.

The Highfield Discovery Garden, is one Cincinnati treasure that makes it easy for Adelynn and I to have some outdoor fun without having to go too Butterfly Craftfar.  Located in Glenwood Gardens in Evendale, OH, Highfield Discovery Garden is convenient to most in the greater Cincinnati area, although it seems to be a well kept secret.  This sectioned off space specifically designed to nurture children’s relationship with nature is ideal for kiddos under the age of 6.  From the train display made out of bamboo and sticks to the vegetable and butterfly garden to the frog pond, there’s lots to see and explore.  One of my favorite things is that each week there is a focus on a different nature theme and it usually includes a craft or hands on activity.  One of the first times that we experienced the programming the theme was “Butterflies” Adelynn was 2 ½.

There are also many paved trails, both within the Discovery Garden and the larger Glendale Gardens as well, making it great for mom’s with strollers. Along the trails there are surprises that you can discover.  A few weeks back Adelynn and I were strolling down by the creek and there was an area set up to build fairy houses and buckets full of nature’s best building supplies.  It was great to see her creativity flourish by using acorns as decorations and moss as a roof. We even completed the little home by giving it a rock fence.

So if you are looking for a quick morning or afternoon outing this is definitely a great place to go.  The cost is $4 for children and $5 for adults but an annual pass for a family of four is very reasonable at $40 and definitely worth the investment.

Have you and your little one(s) already discovered this hidden Cincinnati treasure?  I would love to hear about your experiences in Glenwood Gardens and The Highfield Discovery Garden.

I am a born and raised Cincinnatian and love all that this “big-little” city has to offer. Gardening, organization, maintaining life-long friendships and finding new places around town with my daughter; I always like to be busy but am also quite the homebody. Learning to truly find balance in life and being more “wholely” healthy are things I am leaning more into these days… well at least making the effort to.
