The presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.

When I was little, my Dad used to bring home flowers for my Mom from time to time. Sometimes it was because of a special occasion such as a birthday or an anniversary and sometimes it was just because. Every time he would do this though, there was always a second bouquet just for me. I don’t really remember what my mom’s bouquets looked like, but mine were always the same… a smaller bouquet of simple flowers pic 1yellow roses. He did this because for whatever reason, I have always loved yellow roses and he wanted to make me smile. He did this because he loved me and wanted me to feel special. He did this because time is limited… and we SHOULD create moments that are designed to communicate to the people in our lives that they are important to us. To this day, I can’t see a yellow rose without thinking about my Dad.

Often, when I am in a funk… I splurge on flowers while out running errands. Having that little splash of color and beauty in my house makes me feel lighter. It’s a gift I give myself… in a way I am doing what my Dad did so many years ago and creating a moment of happiness in my own life. We owe those gifts to ourselves too, ya know. It’s amazing really, what flowers can do for a person. I think it is safe to say that I firmly believe the Rutgers University research that supports the gift of flowers to make people truly smile. They certainly do that for me.

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, is a contemporary way to honor the women in your life and is a great excuse to create a moment of happiness for a woman in your life. Women’s Day pays homage to the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.

On March 8, I encourage you to honor a woman in your life by giving the gift of flowers to someone you may not normally think to give flowers to. Create an unexpected moment for a woman in your life.

Here are some suggestions for you:

If you are lucky enough to have someone like this in your life, flowers are a great way to communicate how much joy, love and support they give you.

Your Mother in-Law. Most people would be more inclined to send flowers to their own mother, but that is what makes sending them to your mother in-law that much more unexpected. It’s a great big floral hug that I promise will leave her smiling.

Your Daughter. While I know that my six year old would think getting flowers is pretty cool, I think this one would be especially amazing if you have a teenage daughter. A lot of girls at this age feel awkward and alone at least a little bit every week. The teenage years are HARD! What a fun surprise for that special young lady in your life!

Your Boss or a Co-worker. Do you have a boss whom you admire as a leader? Is there a co-worker who you value for the work and effort the consistently deliver. Or have you noticed someone seems to be overwhelmed or having a rough week. Take a moment and let them know you are thinking about them.

A “Newish” Mom. Everyone floods in right after that new baby is born… then after a few weeks, reality sets in. Pretty much every new mom could use a little color, life and beauty to look at while navigating the trenches of spit-up, poopy diapers and infrequent showers. A well timed bouquet can give them a much needed burst of energy and encouragement.

Someone Who Has Suffered a Loss. Do you know someone who lost a loved within the past year, or even several years ago. Let them know you are thinking of them.

An Older Woman in Your Life. This could be that grandma you always see at church, the older woman who walks your neighborhood streets once a week or even an elderly woman in a nursing home. Older people have so much to offer the world, but often get lost in the shuffle. Let someone know you see them with the unexpected gift of flowers.

A Stranger on the Street. Because you never know what someone’s day and/or life is like. You may make their good day even better, or you make be a glimpse of sunshine in a cloudy one.

So, on March 8th, send a deserving woman some flowers in honor of Women’s Day and create a moment.
