bbImagine your whole house has been sick for a week and you’re about 742 weeks pregnant.  You at least made a walking path through the common areas of the house, but NOT in your son’s room.  There’s not really anywhere for anyone to sit besides the chair that you sit in (and that includes your dining room table).  Your 3-year-old may or may not be wearing pants.  You are wearing pants, but they are yoga pants that you’ve been wearing for at least a couple of days.  You can’t really remember how many.

Enter the smiling Dylan from the new Southwest Ohio branch of Baby Bodyguards.

Baby Bodyguards is a company that is based in the New York metro area, and they offer three categories of services: baby proofing, car seat installation, and infant and child CPR classes in your home.  Dylan and his two business partners, Jon and Shawn, have brought Baby Bodyguards to the Cincinnati area.  I’m not in need of CPR classes or car seat expertise right now, so Dylan came by to do a safety evaluation of my house.

I’m going to be completely honest with you…I’m a mom that just takes things as they come.  I’m not a worrier and not much of a planner.  I usually baby proof after said baby starts to show interest in things that could cause harm.  And even then, I usually only take care of the really big stuff (think a gate to the kitchen and simple outlet covers).  With my son, baby proofing wasn’t much of an issue.  He was a curious fellow, but never tried to stick things in outlets or climb in ovens.  He’s much more of a jump-off-of-any-high-surface kind of guy.  But in getting ready for a second baby in the house, I admit that I will probably need to be a little more vigilant since my attention won’t be focused on one kiddo.

When Dylan entered the house, he kindly did not comment on the toy ninja weapons being wielded by my son as being a baby hazard.  He set down some of the materials he brought on a relatively clean dining room chair and we set off to evaluate the house.  He was expectedly thorough in pointing out things like outlets, pointy corners of low shelving, the fireplace, etc.  But I would like to talk about two things that really stood out during Dylan’s visit.

  1. Not only did Dylan make recommendations for what we do need, he recommended things that we don’t need.  For example, he recommended not using an oven lock as a measure to keep children safe around the oven, so that children didn’t start to use the oven handle to pull up on when they are older.  He recommended gating the kitchen when not able to supervise little ones around a hot oven and removing oven knobs when not in use.
  2. The most noteworthy aspect of Dylan’s visit for me was the amount of developmental knowledge he brought with his descriptions of safety.  For example, he gave me a very detailed explanation of ways to teach children about heat safety, using a the steam from a hot pan of water and a warm/hot coffee cup in different rooms of the house.  It was information that even I, with an advanced degree in child development and many years of experience working with children, didn’t know and hadn’t thought about!

After the evaluation of the house, Dylan showed me a few products that he had brought with him and explained that all products used through Baby Bodyguards are vigorously tested in the company owners’ own home.  They don’t sell every baby-proofing product on the market; only those that they have verified and tested to work the best.

As you can probably tell, I was thoroughly impressed with the knowledge and services that Dylan and the Baby Bodyguards crew have to offer.  I was expecting a run-of-the-mill baby proofing evaluation with a sales pitch trying to get me to buy many products.  All of the information was presented in a way that made me feel in control of my decisions and I felt no pressure to sign up or buy anything!  And as an added bonus, Dylan emailed me all of his recommendations and safety information so I have it handy whenever I want to reference it.

I look forward to working with Dylan and Baby Bodyguards after baby #2 is born…there is this a fabulous retractable gate that I’ve got my eye on!
