Summer Safety: 10 Things You Need to Know

0
The below information is from a sponsored Summer Safety Chat with Goldfish Swim School. We appreciate their partnership and desire to keep summer fun and safe!

Whether you have a beach vacation coming up or you’ll be hanging in your neighborhood, it’s a good time for a little brush up on how to keep your summer safe and full of fun!

– WATER SAFETY –

  1. Work on getting in and out of the pool safely. Elbow, Elbow, Tummy, Knee! Help your little ones learn how to get out of the pool by manipulating their bodies in this order: elbow, elbow, tummy, knee. Practice this often; you can even do this on your living room floor by having your baby climb onto a couch or chair! After you practice, always remember to celebrate. Eventually, your little one will be strong enough to manage the movement on his or her own! This is a skill that kids continue to use to safely exit the pool — even when they are older!
  2. Jump, Turn, Swim to the Wall! Once your child has the movement down, let him  jump off the side of the pool to you, help him physically turn back to the wall and then assist them in getting out of the pool by using the elbow, elbow, tummy, knee method. Do this over and over again, as llittle swimmers become more confident let them go under the water and come to the surface on their own. This teaches kids to automatically turn back to the wall behind them to climb out. If a child were to fall into a pool, this skill could help him find the quickest way to safety.
  3. Sea Otter Float. Work with your child on turning over and getting his face out of the water to take a breath when he fatigues.

Goldfish Safety Day is May 20 – you won’t want to miss it!

– CAR SEAT SAFETY –

4. Learn proper installation (these Car Seat Tips can help!). Then have an expert check you at a Car Seat Fitting Location for extra support.

5. Keep your car picked up! This is easier said than done, but if you are in an accident, any loose toys or objects can become dangerous projectiles.

6. Do not leave children in the car unattended. Temps rise more quickly than you’d expect, so putting an object (like your cell phone or purse) somewhere secure in the back seat can be a great reminder!

– HOME SAFETY –

7. Know where to go! Check out the Cincinnati Children’s Comprehensive Children’s Injury Center for videos and TONS of other safety resources.

8. Keep an eye out. With kids home more in the summer, there are higher incidents of falls, burns, and even poisoning.  Teaching kids best practices and employing smart safety measures (like learning CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver) will save tons of injuries!

– NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY –

9. Teach kids to cross at the crosswalk. Grabbing a loose ball or running through the middle of thestreet increases the risk of injury significantly. Choose the crosswalk, look LEFT – RIGHT – LEFT and continue looking in ALL DIRECTIONS while crossing.

10. Make safety FUN! Find a local program for your kiddos like Monroe Safety Town where they can learn things like bus safety, railroad safety, bike safety, and more! These programs are often free and provide a great deal of information for youg kids in an interactive approach that makes learning fun.  Check out these area neighborhood safety programs, which are free unless otherwise noted:
