Let Them Eat Snow (Ice Cream)!

snow-texture-12-1Did you know that December 13th is Ice Cream Day?  I certainly didn’t, but I’m sure glad I know now (not that I ever need an excuse to eat ice cream).

I’m sure many of us have made our own ice cream at some point in our lives.  My husband and I have a really nifty Cuisinart ice cream maker that turns out delicious ice cream in 20 minutes.  But I remember helping my dad make ice cream with an older electric ice cream maker when I was a kid and having the responsibility of poking a wooden spoon through the whole in the outer tub to allow the melting ice (now salt water) to leak out (and thus not contaminate the ice cream).

But you don’t need a fancy ice cream maker or a bag full of ice to make ice cream.  This year, why don’t you round up the kids and make snow ice cream together?  It’s really simple and spectacularly delicious.  It’s likely to be a snowy winter, so you should have plenty of opportunities to make this sweet treat!

What you need:
4-5 cups of fresh (clean) snow, unpacked
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup sugar

  1. Put the kids to work gathering snow from outside.  If they’re younger, you might want to provide some heavy supervision and direction.  Don’t pack the snow down, just scoop it up.  Put your 4-5 cups in a bowl and place in the freezer.
  2. Mix milk, vanilla, and sugar in a large bowl.  Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Slowly add snow, stirring constantly until thick as ice cream.
  4. Eat and enjoy!!

Have you ever made snow ice cream?  Are you going to try to make it this year?

We’d love to hear how it turns out!
