My Child’s Wardrobe Puts Mine To Shame

0

WardrobeSince I had my precious boy 3.5 months ago, I’ve adopted a uniform of sort. I wear black leggings or yoga pants and the baggiest clean top I can find almost every day. The other days I pretty much bum around in my pajamas until noon and then throw on some sort of athletic looking wear even though I don’t really intend to work out. Today I’m wearing maternity jeans (yes, 3.5 months later) and a flannel shirt that belongs to my husband. It isn’t pretty. Disclaimer: I feel like that’s allowed when you know you’re bound to get spit up on. #newmomlife

On the other hand, my baby is one sharply dressed kid. So sharply dressed in fact, that I wrote adapted a little song about it.  (FYI: I’m no singer, so we’re lucky this is online. It’s set to the tune of “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid.)

He’s got onesies and sleepers a plenty.
He’s got jon-jons and longalls galore.
Monograms? He’s got twenty.
Sets from Carters? No big deal! He has even more!

I don’t know how it started. Okay, fine, I do. I come from a 3 girl family. He’s not only the first boy, but the first grandchild. And his clothes are so fun to shop for. I think so. So do my mom, dad and sisters. As soon as I found out he was a boy, I bought a newborn set at Buy, Buy, Baby. Then I did a little online Carter’s and Gymboree shopping. Then I held it in check… for a while… until I saw the most darling seersucker swimsuit embroidered with alligators and splurged on it. (In retrospect, buying this swimsuit was probably a turning point, a.k.a. an indication my self-control was slipping away).  Then one day I was having my broken iPhone screen replaced at the mall and discovered a sale at baby Gap. Dangerous. I can’t say no to these cute $7 sets. Next thing you know, my child has a wardrobe that is bigger than my husband’s and better than mine. And please, don’t even get me started on all the holiday pajamas this kid has.

I wrote a little song about my baby clothes shopping addiction. Actually, I borrowed the tune from DJ Khaled’s “All I Do I Win.” (Don’t worry, it’s totally child appropriate here).

All I do is shop, shop, shop no matter what
Got baby clothes on my mind I can never get enough
And every time I step up in Carter’s
My cart fills up, up, up
And it stays full
And it stays full
And it stays full

Maybe some of you can identify. Maybe you can’t and to that I compliment your self-control. On one hand, it’s a good thing. He looks adorable. He is cute. He is comfortable. I haven’t had to rush out because he suddenly doesn’t fit into anything. I don’t have to do laundry every day even when he spits up or has blowouts on multiple outfits. Plus, his stylishness distracts from my frumpiness when we are out and about. On the other hand, nothing makes him happier than kicking back in just a diaper and I may be cash poor from his wardrobe. I’ve already packed up a newborn and 0-3 month bin of clothes that no longer fit. (Okay, I’m crying over here. How does he grow so fast?)  I swear, if we have a girl next, she is going to be wearing boy clothes with a headband or bow. Bless her heart.

To all the soon-to-be moms and new moms out there, people are going to warn you. They’ll say, “Don’t buy too many clothes,” or “People are going to give them to you” or “They grow too fast.” This advice is well-meaning and true. If you can’t follow it, don’t worry. It happens to the best of us. If you truly can’t handle the amount of clothes you have, there are a number of good solutions: return, re-gift, donate, or sell to a child’s consignment shop. Otherwise, let your little fashionista shine, wear your mom uniform proudly, and hope one day that your wardrobe is *almost* as cool. That’s what I do.

I am a Cincinnati transplant. My husband and I moved here last October from Washington, D.C., where I was an Early Childhood teacher, instructional coach, and most recently principal at a charter school. I’m now a mom to a precious 8-month-old boy and a dramatic 2-year-old golden retriever. I am passionate about education and love spending time with family, reading, walking/ hiking, Pure Barre, taking pictures, discovering new restaurants, fantasy football, and “quick” trips to Target! I’m excited to start exploring all that Cincinnati has to offer a family and to share my journey into motherhood (and undoubtedly some first-time parent laughs) with you!
