Earth Day (And Beyond)

0

Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson and held on April 22, 1970 as an opportunity to share knowledge on environmental issues. It has since expanded to include many countries and events across the globe all with the same focus: What can we do to protect our earth?

earthdayCincinnati has a wealth of events this month, taking place over several weekends. Here are my picks for Earth Day and beyond-each takes place at a location you can enjoy year-round!

Have a variety of ages and interests in your family? Head over to Sawyer Point for a day full of fun and learning. Whether you check out the demonstrations and vendors or simply hang out on the lawn, mark your calendar to celebrate all things Earth Day! Check out Sawyer Point in warm months for other great events on our beautiful river.

Celebrate Earth Day early with a jam-packed schedule of events ranging from a scavenger hunt to a recycled costume contest.

Party for the Planet at Cincinnati Zoo

Perfect for mom and dad’s date night, this event helps you learn to live more sustainably with experts on everything from rain barrels to composting–then you can stay for Tunes & Blooms! If you like what you see and don’t have a membership, this is a great time to purchase one so that you may enjoy special events all summer long with the kids.

Though slated for future park development, Johnson Hills Park is currently my go-to spot when my toddler needs wide open spaces! Nestled on a hillside with a magnificent view, it boasts huge fields and nature trails. This year, they’re hosting a scavenger hunt to get kids outdoors. Come get acquainted with this hidden gem, then come back all spring and summer to enjoy picnics and hiking.

A scavenger hunt (partially in darkness–bring a flashlight!) on the trails of the park gets the whole family outdoors. Dress for the weather.

If you’re looking to get your family involved in conservation  and improve your relationship with the natural world even after Earth Day, my pick is the Cincinnati Nature Center. With many miles of trails, a Nature Preschool and Playscape as well as many interpretive exhibits and events, this is one membership I can’t live without. And on Earth Day weekend, you can get a sample of this wonderful resource FREE of charge! If you’re already a member, introduce a friend!

Admission is FREE to non-members. Hike miles of trails and enjoy the great outdoors. Also stop in for the annual Native Plant Sale!

Want to give back for Earth Day?  Make a direct impact with the annual cleanup effort at various locations in the East Fork/Little Miami River Watershed. Volunteers are briefed, sign waivers and then pick up litter from our waterways during this daylong event. This event is best for older children. After you stuff bags with litter, enjoy the miles of trails and waterways at the parks within this watershed.
